Once in a couple of years people get riled up over another side-by-side video that shows how a popular movie “plagiarized” Andrei Tarkovsky. Essays are written up about how modern culture lacks originality and critics complain about the gone days of the “golden cinema”.
What we never seem to understand is that every director copies. You can’t make movies without first seeing a lot of them and lifting what you like. But it’s a lot easier to compare to Tarkovsky, because everyone knows his work. It takes a lot more effort to go through 60+ years of archives to remember how Tarkovsky copied and what his muses were. We all breathe culture and remix. We don’t need to be angry. We just need to fully cherish all this creativity, no matter what the form.
