The Oscar winning movie “The Shape of Water” was influenced by other works before it. The old trope of a human falling in love with a creature is as old as folk tradition. It’s no coincidence that other movies look similar. Guillermo del Toro consciously and unconsciously lifted elements that made those stories great. Including the lone female trope from Amelie.
Knowing the references and inspiration for a work makes that work more special, not less.
Every movie is a world of remix. The idea of a original old work makes less and less sense the more you dig into a creator’s background and influences.
